The warm days of summer are finally here, which means more people are taking advantage of their car’s air conditioning. Although it may seem like a less important tune-up, keeping your car’s air conditioning system in good shape is essential not only for your comfort but for the value of your car as well. Here are a few of the most common air conditioning warning signs to look out for:

Foul Odors

If you’ve ever gotten into a hot car and blasted the AC only to smell a strange plastic odor, you’ve been in a car with improper air conditioning. Any unusual smells coming from the air conditioner are signs that something isn’t right with the system, and a checkup is in order. A damp, musty odor may mean that mold or mildew is growing in the vents, or that the air filter needs replacing. If you detect a sweet, chemical-like smell, that may indicate an antifreeze leak, which needs attention immediately.

No Cold Air

It’s frustrating when your car’s vents are pushing out warm air instead of cool, especially on a hot day. Most commonly, a lack of cool air means that there’s a leak in the air conditioning system. Car air conditioning systems use an agent called Freon, which cools the warm air before circulating it back into the cabin. If the hose isn’t screwed on tightly or there’s a break in the gauge, the result will be warm air that doesn’t get the chance to cool down with Freon

Water Leaks

After running your car’s air conditioning, it’s normal to see some water leaking underneath the car. However, if water begins showing up inside your vehicle as you use the AC, there’s a problem. In a vehicle’s HVAC system, the drain for condensation may become blocked or clogged, resulting in water leaking inside the car. Similarly, the drain may not be sealed where it connects with the system and will cause interior leaks.

Uncommon Noises

A working AC system should be relatively quiet. Uncommon noises such as rattling may mean that the air conditioning compressor is failing and needs maintenance or replacement. If you hear a grinding or high pitched sound, the problem may lie within the pulley or the belt
